How to Fix a Running Toilet

A running toilet is a common plumbing issue that can waste a significant amount of water and increase your utility bills. Fortunately, fixing a running toilet is often a straightforward process. The first step is to identify the cause of the problem, which is typically related to components inside the tank.

Start by removing the tank lid and inspecting the internal parts. The most common causes of a running toilet are a faulty flapper, a worn-out flush valve, or an incorrectly adjusted float. Check the flapper, which is the rubber valve at the bottom of the tank. If it’s damaged or doesn’t seal properly, it will need to be replaced. To test the flapper, press it down and see if the running stops; if it does, replacing the flapper should solve the problem.

Next, examine the flush valve and ensure it’s functioning correctly. If the valve is leaking, it may need to be replaced. Additionally, check the float mechanism, which controls the water level in the tank. If the float is set too high, water will continuously flow into the overflow tube. Adjust the float height to ensure the water level is about one inch below the top of the overflow tube.

If these steps don’t resolve the issue, consider checking the fill valve, which controls the water flow into the tank. If the valve is malfunctioning, it may need adjustment or replacement.

After making any repairs or adjustments, test the toilet by flushing it a few times to ensure it no longer runs continuously. If the problem persists, it may be time to consult a professional plumber for further diagnosis and repair.
